Between Motorcycles and Flowershops

Scene 1
A motorcycle is heard pulling into the driveway. Mr.Raider enters looking disheveled from a long day at the bikeshop. However, he still smiles as his son timidly walks up to him Mr.Raider: Hey, bud. How are you?
Burke: Uh, hey, dad pretty good. How are you?
Mr.Raider: Mr.Raider sighs, slinging his jacket over the back of the couch Not too bad, just lots of customers. You know bike weeks next week.
Burke: Y-Yeah.
Mr.Raider: Noticing his son's odd behavior You alright bud? You're acting a little strange.
Burke: Y-Yeah I’m alright, but there's uh something I want to tell you.
Mr.Raider: Walking closer to his son Okay, what is it?
Burke: sighs Well, I'm uh going out with someone-
Mr.Raider: Smiles patting his son on the shoulder That’s great bud I’m really happy for you!
Burke: Y-Yeah, dad but um-
Mr.Raider: laughing So, uh who is the lucky girl?
Burke: That’s the thing dad it’s-
Mr.Raider: Oh, I bet it’s Margaret or Jane or what about that red head in your english class uh Ruby or-
Burke: Dad! It’s not a girl!
Mr.Raider: His smile falters What do you mean?
Burke: He backs away from his father It’s a guy, It’s uh Gil…… It’s Gil.
Mr.Raider: Flustered he clears his throat So, your um your……
Burke: Yeah.
Mr.Raider: And it’s the college boy down the street.
Burke: Yeah.
Mr.Raider: Sits down on the couch and sighs Why?
Burke: Getting defensive Why what? Why is it a boy? Or why is it Gil?
Mr.Raider: Getting up Why all of it Burke?! Burke backs away from his father Shit Burke, I can’t do this right now, He pushes past his son, heading for the stairs but in the morning we’re talking about this. He stomps up the stairs/ exits
Burke stand there for a moment contemplating what to do, till he runs out of the house/ exits, and the lights snap to black
Scene 2
The lights come up, low, Burke enters, runs up to Gil’s front door, and knocks. Ms.Dylan answers the door Ms.Dylan: Happy, but surprised to see him Burke honey! How are you? What are you doing here this late at night?
Burke: Shaken Fine Ms.Dylan, but uh could I stay here for the night?
Ms.Dylan: O-Of course dear, but whatever for?
Burke: Stepping into the house he hesitates Me and my dad had a fight.
Ms.Dylan: Oh, What about?
Burke: I told him about me and Gil
Ms.Dylan: I see. She pauses, looking him over as if searching for something He didn’t hit you did he?
Burke: No! No, he wouldn’t….. at least I don’t think…… he got upset, said we’d talk about it in the morning, but I got scared so……..
Ms.Dylan: Don’t worry he’ll come around. It’ll be alright.
Burke: Really? You think so? What if he-
Ms.Dylan: She pulls him into a hug Trust me it’ll be fine. She pulls back Now, why don’t you go see Gil he’s in his room, Burke heads for the steps your sleeping down here tonight though. Burke blushes as she laughs
The lights fade as Burke reaches the top of the steps
Scene 3
The lights come up on Gil’s bedroom, Burke enters and walks to the bed where Gil sits with papers strewn about him. His finals are coming up and he only has this week to study for all his classes. His hair is a mess, his close look no better, and he looks like he has not slept for at least two days. A coffee cup sits on his night stand. Burke: Clears his throat H-Hey Gil.
Gil: At first Gil is startled then he sighs in relief Burke, don’t do that to me. I could have had a heart attack. Burke grins, Gil smiles back as he gets up, and walks over to Burke So, what brings you to my humble abode? He smooths back Burke's hair and kisses his forehead
Burke: Just wanted to see you.
Gil: You know I have finals this week, you wouldn’t have come over if it wasn’t something important. So, why are you really here?
Burke: Seeing you is important.
Gil: Whines Burke.
Burke: Alright, my dad he…… I-I told him…… about us.
Gil: Did he kick you out? Did he hurt you? He looks Burke over
Burke: No and no, I’m fine. He pushes past Gil to go sit on the bed
Gil: Oh, so then why are you here? Not that I don’t like having you here, I do, it’s just if everything's fine…..
Burke: Everything’s not fine though! Tears well up in his eyes He was upset and asked me why, why I had to be like this, why I had to be with you. He pauses He said we would talk about it in the morning and- and I got scared. He sobs the last sentence
Gil: Gil goes and sits by Burke, pulling him into a hug Hey, hey it’s alright. Everything will be okay.
Burke: That’s what your mom said, but I just don’t know Gil what if he does kick me out or beat me. Like- Like in one of those stories you hear about in the news or in books. I don’t want that to happen, I love my dad but-
Gil: Now, you know me, mom, and Eddy would never let that happen to you. If any of that happens, which it won't, you know you have a place here.
Burke: He sniffles with a slight smile Thank you Gil.
Gil: No need to thank me, He kisses Burke's cheek, with a devious smile besides soon i’ll be getting my own place, and then we can move in there. How does that sound? Just you and me. He laughs
Burke: Blushing T-That sounds alright.
The lights fade to black
Scene 4
The lights come up,low, Mr.Raider is lying in bed tossing and turning, trying to go to sleep. However, his mind is still plagued by the conversation he and his son had a little over an hour ago Mr.Raider: God Damit! He hops out of bed and heads to Burke's room . He knocks on the door Hey, bud can we talk for a second? I know I said we’d talk about it in the morning, but I can’t sleep and I bet you can’t either so, He pushes open the door I guess I just want to say- He looks inside the room and notices his son is not there Burke? He heads down the steps, his son is not down stairs. Panic overtakes him. Burke! He rushes out the front door and the lights snap to black
Scene 5
The lights come up,low, Mr.Raider enters, running to Gil’s front door. He pounds on the door, and Eddy answers the door Eddy: Hello Mr.Raider. What brings you here at this hour?
Mr.Raider: Out of breath Eddy, my son. Is he here?
Eddy: Accusingly I don’t know Mr.Raider. Why would your son be here at this hour? He looks Mr.Raider up and down disapprovingly
Ms.Dylan: Calling from inside the house Oh, let the man in Ed!
Eddy: Yes, dear. He begrudgingly allows Mr.Raider into the house
Ms.Dylan: Hello Mr.Raider. How are you?
Mr.Raider: Is my son here?
Ms.Dylan: Yes, he’s upstairs with Gil.
Mr.Raider: Visibly relaxing Then I’m a bit better than I was. He pauses Uh, could you call them down, please, I need to have a talk with my son.
Eddy: What kind of talk you mean Mr.Raider?
Ms.Dylan: Ed! Stop it now!
Mr.Raider: Looking at Eddy in something akin to disbelief and disgust The kind with words. Eddy backs off but continues to look at Mr.Raider suspiciously
Ms.Dylan: At the base of the stairs Boys could you come down here for a second.
Gil: Yeah, mom be right down.
The boys come down the steps, but stop at the base of the stairs when they see Mr.Raider
Mr.Raider: Stepping closer to the boys Burke.
Burke: He steps around Gil and moves a bit hesitantly toward his father Dad.
Mr.Raider: Grabs his son and pulls him into a hug Don’t you ever do that to me again! I was scared to death, I thought I lost you!
Burke: I’m fine dad.
Mr.Raider: You might be, but I don’t think we are. The other occupants of the house visibly tense
Burke: He pulls slightly away from his father W-What do you mean dad?
Mr.Raider: Sighs The way I talked to you this evening it was uncalled for, and I’m sorry.
Burke: Dad.
Mr.Raider: I love you Burke. No matter who you are or who you decide to be with, I love you, and nothing will ever change that. Just never do this to me again I don’t think my old heart could take it. He laughs
Burke:I love you too dad, and I won’t, I promise. They wrap each other in a tight embrace
Mr.Raider: Pulling out of the embrace Now, who is this young man dating my son? I’d like to have a talk with him. Everyone else smiles, but Gil looks at Mr.Raider in utter terror
Lights snap to black
